my winter break will be dedicated to mastering this. yes. it’s real. 

In the most non-nerdy way possible:

The water molecules that stuck to the cup  travel at the same velocity at which the cup was released, thus creating a spinning vortex of the same shape of the cup. this vortex  traps the water molecules, and yeahhh… It collapses because the molecules lose energy as they spin and can’t hold the form anymore. 

yeah yeah yeah the guy is an illusionist but i think it works.
